Congregation Tifereth Israel was founded in 1901 after members split from Agudas Achim. In their charter they were named First Hungarian Hebrew Congregation of Columbus. They practiced traditional Judaism while meeting in various homes. In 1912-1913 they renamed themselves Tifereth Israel. Their first building, purchased in 1914, was located at 333 Parsons Ave. Tifereth associated with the Conservative movement in 1922 and, shortly thereafter, moved to an old house on Broad St. The buidling in which they reside today was built on the same land and opened in 1927. In late 2025, CJHS launched a digitization project with a grant from the Talis Archives Fund of the Tifereth Israel Foundation. These funds will provide a unique opportunity to digitize and catalog hundreds of documents, objects, and photos in the collection which is held in the Columbus Jewish Historical Society archive. This catalog will be updated regularly as the project progresses. For further information contact CJHS.
